The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree is for students who would like to complete a Bachelor’s Degree after having completed the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree at a community or technical college. This degree provides students the opportunity to complete an abbreviated program of study relevant to their career objectives. Students pursuing this degree are required to select a program of study from among the Minors or Certificates offered at the university. Minor or Certificate completion is posted to the student transcript upon completion of the degree. This degree is offered online. 

 The requirements for this degree include the following: 

  1. Students must complete an AAS degree from a regionally accredited institu-tion of higher education prior to graduation from MSSU with the BAS degree. 
  2. All Baccalaureate Degree Gen Ed Core 42 Requirements  General Education Requirements of the university must be met. 
  3. Students must earn the required 39 upper division credits as specified by university policy. 
  4. Students must complete a Minor or Certificate in a field of their choice at Missouri Southern. Each Minor or Certificate chosen must require at least 15 semester credit hours. 
  5. All other university policies related to admissions and bachelor’s degree completion must be met. 

Advising for this degree is available through the academic unit offering the Minor or the Certificate the student chooses to pursue. Students desiring this degree are strongly encouraged to see an advisor and declare their program of study upon matriculation. Minors and Certificates available, and their associated academic units, are listed in this catalog. 

 

Completion of Associate Degree (AS or AAS): 60-64 Hours

General Education Core 42 Areas


Area 1B Civics: 3 Hours


Area 1 Social and Behavioral Sciences 9 hours total. Six hours from Social Science (area 1A) and three hours from Civics (area 1B).

Area 2A Written Communication: 6 Hours


Area 2 Communications 9 hours total. Six hours in written communication (area 2A) and three hours in oral communication (area 2B). ENG 101 and ENG 102 or ENG 111 fulfill area 2A.

Area 2B Oral Communication: 3 Hours


Area 2 Communications 9 hours total. Six hours in written communication (area 2A) and three hours in oral communication (area 2B).

Area 3 Non-lab Natural Science: 3 Hours


Area 3 Natural Sciences 7 hours total. Three hours from a non-lab course and four hours from courses with a lab. Must have a minimum of one course with a lab, different disciplines.

Area 3 Natural Science with Lab: 4 Hours


Area 3 Natural Sciences 7 hours total. Three hours from a non-lab course and four hours from courses with a lab. Must have a minimum of one course with a lab, different disciplines.

Area 5B Fine Arts: 3 Hours


Area 5 14 hours total. Humanities 6 hours (area 5A)/Fine Arts 3 hours (area 5B)/Global Competencies 3 hours (area 5C)/Health & Wellness 2 hours (area 5D).

Area 5D Health and Wellness: 2 Hours


Area 5 14 hours total. Humanities 6 hours (area 5A)/Fine Arts 3 hours (area 5B)/Global Competencies 3 hours (area 5C)/Health & Wellness 2 hours (area 5D).

Minor or Certificate (required)


Each minor or certificate must require at least 15 credit hours.

Electives as needed to total 120 approved credit hours


Including 39 upper division 300-400 level.
