PERF 0460 - Principles of Arts Management and Administration

Fall, Spring 2 Credit Hours
Introduce students to the practical skills required for the successful management of not-for-profit visual and performing arts organizations. Topics covered include the evolution of the field, economic impact, audience development, the internal culture and structure, external influences, leadership, governance, planning, human resources, marketing/publicity, fundraising, financial management, and issues associated with nonprofit organizations. Students will be introduced to a wide range of arts organizations, working arts managers, and institutional models. In addition to understanding the organizational structures and functions of an arts organization, students will have begun to develop a philosophy of management in the arts, a theoretical model for general management, and practical tools for its practice. This course is especially useful for those in the performing or fine arts profession who may be an artist for, a liaison with, and/or manager of said organization type.
