PHYS 0310 - Introduction to Geophysics

NEW COURSE DESCRIPTION: Geophysics is the application of physical principles (Physics and Mathematics) to the study of the Earth’s structure, phenomenon and process. Applications of geophysical methods include the determination of subsurface stratigraphy and soil properties, characterization of groundwater flow and storage, the identification and tracing of hazardous substances and contaminants in the subsurface, the detection of buried objects and unexploded ordinance, the characterization of soil and bedrock properties for stability, and the exploration of the subsurface for valuable mineral and energy resources. Subjects covered will include: data processing, seismology, seismic reflection, Ground Penetrating Radar, seismic refraction, gravity, and electrical methods. Laboratories will reinforce topics covered in lectures and many will utilize computers. Some laboratories will involve traveling to local field sites and using field geophysical equipment to gather and process and interpret our own data. Three lectures and one 3-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisites: GEOL 120 or 210, MATH 140 or higher level math, PHYS 260, or permission of instructor. Note: PHYS 260 may be taken concurrently with this course.
