Associate Degree Requirements

Associate of Science Degree


  1. Residence: The last 15 semester hours must be completed in residence at Missouri Southern.
  2. Credit Hours: A minimum of 60 hours must be completed.
  3. Grade Point Average (GPA): The minimum cumulative and major field GPA must be 2.0.
  4. Major Field: The student must meet the course requirements in the particular program of study as approved by an advisor.
  5. Civics Exam: Any student entering a public institution of higher education for the first time after July 2019 who is pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree must pass the exam as required by the State of Missouri (Senate Bill 807, Section 170.013).Civics Exam FAQs  
  6. University Experience:  A university experience (UE 100) course is required for all Missouri Southern degree-seeking students. UE 100 is also required for transfer students with fewer than 30 credit hours who have not completed an orientation course. Dual credit and credit-in-escrow are excluded.
  7. General Education Curriculum Requirements: The degree requires completion of the general education requirement curriculum courses as  well as those outlined in the student’s major field of study. The general education requirement curriculum required courses are:

2. Communication 6 Hours


4. Mathematics: 3 Hours


5D. Health and Wellness: 2 Hours


Institutional Requirement: 1 Hour


Total General Education Requirements: 24 Hours


  • Students should select appropriate general education courses for their discipline.
  • The Institutional Requirement course is required for all degree seeking students who enter MSSU with less than 30 credit hours (excluding dual credit and credit in escrow) and transfer students who have not completed an orientation course.
  • General education curriculum courses required for the Associate of Science degree typically do not completely fulfill the general education curriculum requirements for the Baccalaureate Degree.
