Master of Science in Education

The Master of Science: Curriculum & Instruction program is based on a conceptual framework that defines the role of the teacher as a reflective decision maker. In this role, the teacher must make decisions about pedagogical approaches and lesson design. Our conceptual framework creates teachers who can think critically and formulate decisions related to the multiple roles of teaching for its successful achievement and develops reflective educators for a global society. Some extensions of the role of the teacher as a reflective decision maker include the teacher as a practitioner, lifelong learner, researcher, provider of service and change agent.

The Master in Curriculum & Instruction program provides seasoned teachers an opportunity to acquire knowledge, improve their practice and prepare for curriculum leadership roles. The program is convenient and accessible. Courses are structured as hybrids (both on campus and via the Internet) with on-campus segments offered in the evenings and during the summer. Faculty in the program are experienced educational leaders and content specialists. The cohort structure of the program allows students to complete the program in six semesters. Note: This program does not lead to certification.

Admission to the M.S.Ed.

Candidates must complete the following:

Submit an application for graduate admission and application fee.
Achieve a minimum score of 700 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination. Tests taken after 8/1/2011, the minimum score is 280.
Complete a supervised writing assessment conducted by the Department of Teacher Education.
Have earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Education (BSE) degree from a college or university accredited by agencies recognized by Missouri Southern State University.
Provide other graduate transcripts (if applicable).
Submit three professional letters of reference; one from current supervisor and two from colleagues.
