PSY 0242 - Introduction to Neuroscience

3 Credit Hours
Neuroscience is a field of study at the intersection of Biology and Psychology in which we study the physical substrates underlying the behavior of many organisms. It is an immense field of study centered on the structure, function, and systems of neurons. Neuroscience is a study of how neurons interact with an environment, and with each other, to produce an organism’s adaptive behaviors. Students in this course will be introduced to the foundational principles of neuroscience from the perspective of Psychology. Multiple topics related to neurons and nervous systems will be examined in the contexts of behavior and mental processes. This course could serve as a foundation for further study in Neuroscience, but it could also enrich an understanding of a theoretical and methodological perspective in Psychology. Prerequisites: PSY 100 with minimum grade of ‘C’ and BIO 101, BIO 108/BIO 109, BIO 121, or BIO 180 with minimum grade of ‘C’.
