JS 0509 - Inequalities in America

Americans embrace rhetoric with declarations of “all men are created equal”, “liberty and justice for all”, “equal protection of the law”, and so forth. Despite these claims, the American experience is filled with systemic inequalities and injustices. Discrimination, whether implicit or explicit, individual or institutional, are part of the fabric of the American experience. This course will challenge students to develop a personal philosophy and individual analysis of their experiences with inequality and injustice in America. This interdisciplinary course will be taught by a group of faculty who will examine inequality and discrimination from various scholarly and research-driven perspectives. Prerequisite Junior level standing, a 3.2 GPA, and permission of the instructor. This graduate-level course may meet concurrently with an undergraduate course, but students may not enroll in both the undergraduate and graduate courses simultaneously. Undergraduate students who enroll in the graduate course must have instructor permission, submit all required documentation, and are required to complete all the graduate coursework. Undergraduate students may be able to count hours toward a graduate degree (but this is not guaranteed). Prerequisite Junior level standing, a 3.2 GPA, and permission of the instructor.
